Benefits of “POCUS” Ultrasound in the Etiological Diagnosis of Dyspnea in Emergency Patients: An Integrative Review
Main Article Content
Abstract
The use of Point of Care ultrasound (POCUS) positively influenced and streamlined the initial management of critically ill emergency room patients. Given the need for rapid and safe diagnoses, this work aims to show the benefits of POCUS ultrasound in the etiological diagnosis of dyspnea in emergency patients. This integrative review was carried out based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. It was searched in the National Library of Medicine (PUBMED) database of initial publications until December 2024 with the following mesh terms: “emergency” AND “POCUS ultrasound” AND “Dyspnea”. 165 references were screened, 145 being excluded after applying the inclusion criteria. It was concluded that adding POCUS ultrasound to the initial assessment of patients with dyspnea causes a significant narrowing of differential diagnoses and time to treatment.
